Press Releases March 24, 2003 Media Release Improv finals promises to be a talent-filled night (WATERLOO, ONTARIO, MARCH 24, 2003) - After an incredible week of unprecedented talent and excitement, the biggest-ever Waterloo Regional Improv Games will wrap up this Thursday, March 27th, as the area's top five teams return to the theatre for the tournament's finals. During last week's preliminary round, a total of seventeen energetic teams competed for their ticket to the finals, representing high schools from Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, Cambridge, London, Hamilton, and several other cities in the area. The top five schools after all four nights of preliminary play were as follows: Glenview and Preston from Cambridge, GCVI from Guelph, Rockway from Kitchener, and Grimsby Secondary School (from Grimsby). These five teams are now busily preparing for this Thursday's championship round. At the end of the night of finals, the winning team will move on to the national tournament in Ottawa at the beginning of April. The five teams -- of no more than eight students each -- will again compete to produce high-quality, spontaneous theatrical scenes. The teams' play is assessed by a panel of judges made up of Improv Games alumni and members of the local theatre community. This marks the third year the Canadian Improv Games has held a tournament in this area. The competition has grown markedly over the years, growing from ten teams in 2001 to twelve in 2002 to this year's total of seventeen. The extremely popular Games, first played in 1978 in Ottawa, have quickly spread across the country to include tournaments from Vancouver to St. John's, and most large centres in between. The local regional finals, like
the preliminary round, are held at Kitchener's King Street Theatre Centre.
Tickets to the finals are available at $5 for students and $10 for adults
from the King Street Theatre Centre's Box Office. Call (519) 571-0928.

(WATERLOO, ONTARIO, MARCH 9, 2003) - The Canadian Improv Games celebrates its third year in Southern Ontario next week when high school students from the area compete in the third annual Waterloo Regional Improv Tournament. The preliminary round of play opens Monday, March 17th and ends Thursday, March 20th. The final night of play, for the best five teams, follows a week later, on Thursday the 27th. The competition is held at downtown Kitchener's King Street Theatre Centre. The competition, first played in 1978 in Ottawa, has quickly spread across the country to include tournaments in Vancouver, St. John's, and most large centres in between. This third year marks the local tournament's largest, with an unprecedented nineteen teams registered to compete. Although the tournament is centred in Kitchener-Waterloo -- and roughly half the teams are from the K-W, Guelph, and Cambridge area -- teams from as far west as London and as far east as St. Catharines are making the trip to K-W for the energy-filled competition. High school teams of no more than eight students will compete to produce high-quality, spontaneous theatrical scenes. As in the past, the teams' play will be judged by Improv Games alumni and members of the local theatre community. The most successful team will go in April to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa to compete against schools from across the country. The students rave about the opportunity to build confidence, develop their theatrical abilities, and collaborate with other young actors. Tickets are available at $5 for students and $10 for adults per night from the King Street Theatre Centre's Box Office. Call (519) 571-0928.
