I would like to tell you all about my family!!
Antonie and I met in 1984, when we both started nursing school in Hilversum,
the Netherlands. Antonie finished the training and has been an RN since 1988,
I stopped the training in 1987.We got married on June 23, 1989 and
decided to move to Canada, which we did in May 1990. We settled in Cambridge,
Ontario, and we both found a job in the same hospital, where Antonie works
in Emergency, and I am a Health Care Aid on a Geriatric floor.
Since 1999 we both work in a hospital closer to home.
We had our first child, Sean Brian, in August of 1994. Soon after that,
I became pregnant again, and Alana Rebecca was born in September 1995.
In the beginning of 1997 I became pregnant for a third time. I had an
uneventful pregnancy and Dana Michelle was born on September 28, 1997.
Things were quite scary right after she was born, as she wasn't breathing
on her own. They rushed her to the nursery, where she started breathing
on her own after they helped her along. But they noticed she wasn't doing
too well, she couldn't get enough oxygen in her blood. She was intubated,
and transfered to McMaster Medical Centre in Hamilton. They told us there
that Dana had Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension, most likely due to
Meconium Aspiration. It was also suspected that she had Down's Syndrome,
which was later confirmed by chromosome testing. She was on the ventilator
all her life, while the doctors tried everything to save her life, but
they were unable to do so. We made the *extremely hard* decision to take
Dana off life support, and she passed away in our arms on October 7, 1997.
